Tour buses come under scrutiny after fatal bus crashes

On Monday night, a tour bus traveling from New York's Chinatown to Philadelphia crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike, killing two people and injuring 40 more. The New Jersey accident came just three days after a fatal tour bus crash in the Bronx that took the lives of 15 people as they traveled from a casino in Connecticut to Chinatown.

Driver intentionally hits New Jersey pedestrian

Last weekend, a New Jersey woman was walking home from a friend's house with her 14-year-old brother. When her brother dropped a ball into the street and in the path of an oncoming car, the woman ran out to retrieve it, apologizing to the driver and stating that it was an accident. Enraged, the driver got out of his car and began cursing and yelling at the woman, stating that he would "show you an accident". He backed up and drove toward the woman, intentionally striking her with his car.

Nursing home fined after resident's choking death

In a nursing home, it is easy for staff to overlook the younger, healthier patients for those with more severe health problems that require more time and effort. However, it is important to for aides and medical professionals to keep track of all of the residents' needs, no matter how minor they may seem.

New Jersey woman follows GPS into oncoming car

In a recent car insurance commercial, a character named "Mayhem" portrays the role of the vehicle's GPS navigation system. As the GPS, the actor screams out directions, then changes his instructions at the last second, causing the driver to panic and drive into several nearby vehicles, causing a massive car accident. This may seem like a comical way to illustrate the need for good car insurance, but for one New Jersey woman, it is likely hitting too close to home after her GPS system directed her right into a head-on collision.

Denture cream users file products liability suit

"Fixodent - and forget it!" The well-known slogan for Fixodent denture cream is meant to imply that the cream allows users to go about their lives without constant worry about their dentures. However, for Mark Jacoby, whose debilitating nerve damage has confined him to a wheelchair, the slogan has taken on a whole new meaning. "Well, apparently I can't forget it because it took a lot away from me," he said. Jacoby believes that his nerve damage and resulting disability is due to Fixodent's high zinc content, and he is not alone. Several former Fixodent users have filed a class action products liability lawsuit against Fixodent's manufacturer, Proctor & Gamble, alleging that the denture cream is responsible for their health problems.

Hackensack bar found liable under New Jersey dram shop law

When a car accident victim files a lawsuit seeking damages for life-altering injuries received in a crash, there are often many defending parties named in the suit: drivers, vehicle and auto parts manufacturers, state transportation officials, or any of a number of others. A South Hackensack bar is finding itself as one such defendant after it was found 20 percent responsible for the severe injuries sustained by a New Jersey man based on New Jersey dram shop laws.

Lawsuit Lenders Carry a High Cost, Part Two

Last week we discussed the growing phenomenon of lawsuit lenders and their potentially harmful effects on unaware personal injury plaintiffs who find themselves owing lenders a significant part of their eventual settlement check. Because lenders designate themselves as investors or financers, they remain out of the realm of state or federal regulation of lenders, which is how they are able to charge exorbitantly high interest rates (up to 100 percent) and withhold information from plaintiffs.

Lawsuit Lenders Carry a High Cost, Part One

When Larry Long suffered a stroke due to his consumption of prescription pain medication Vioxx, it resulted in significant harm, both physical and financial. He became dangerously close to foreclosure while waiting for a settlement from a class-action lawsuit, and had to explore his diminishing options until he could receive the money he knew was coming. He decided to take out a loan from lawsuit lender Oasis Legal Finance in the amount of $9,150 to tide him over until his settlement came through. When he finally received his settlement of $27,000 a mere 18 months later, Long found himself owing Oasis over $23,000.

Can Music Prevent Nursing Home Negligence?

One of the most telling signs of nursing home neglect is the existence of bedsores. Also known as pressure sores or pressure ulcers, bedsores are common among elderly or disabled patients who are bedridden or who are in wheelchairs, unable to move and change positions without assistance. According to nursing home industry standards, such patients need to be moved at least every two hours to prevent bedsores from forming. However, a busy staff means that doesn't always happen, which can lead to injury or even death.

Christmas Eve Turnpike Crash Kills Two and Injures Five

What started as a tractor-trailer's mechanical failure ended with a multi-car pileup that took the lives of two people on the New Jersey Turnpike early Christmas Eve morning. According to New Jersey police, the multiple car accident occurred when two wheels flew off the tractor-trailer into traffic, causing a nearby vehicle to crash into another. When a passenger in that vehicle got out to inspect the damage, he was struck by another car and killed. And when that driver exited his vehicle to help, he met the same fate.
