Four New Jersey teens killed in car accident

Usually, when high school students, parents and supporters gather at a New Jersey high school, they do so to cheer on a school sports team, see a school play, or support another academic or extracurricular achievement. And this is how it should be. Young people should gather to celebrate their accomplishments, not to mourn fellow students who have been taken much too soon.

Distracted driver cited for using two phones behind the wheel

Government officials in New Jersey and at the federal level have increased their focus on educating drivers about the dangers of using a cell phone behind the wheel. Despite these efforts, traffic safety statistics indicate that the number of car accidents, injuries and deaths caused by distracted driving have increased significantly in recent years.

Bergen County police cite 93 for violation of pedestrian law

Last week, in a display of creative law enforcement, an Elmwood Park police officer put on plain clothes and spent three hours walking back and forth across Broadway to test local drivers' knowledge of the state's relatively new pedestrian crossing law. However, the measure turned out to be successful: police officers issued 93 tickets to drivers for noncompliance with the law.

Avoid distracted driving during your summer road trip

For most New Jersey children, the new school year starts in a matter of weeks, so families who are hoping to squeeze in one last summer adventure had better do it soon. And as the cost of airplane tickets remains high, many families will turn to a great American tradition: the road trip.

New Jersey teen driving summit aims to educate young drivers

Last week, a group of 100 New Jersey high school students gathered at Rutgers University for the state's first Teen Safe Driving Summit. Organized and carried out by a group of students, the summit aimed to reduce car accidents by educating students on safe driving techniques. In addition, organizers hoped to empower attendees to establish educational programs on safe driving at their home schools.

Three deaths in New Jersey SUV accident

Three people died and three more suffered serious injuries when a sport utility vehicle was involved in a single-car crash on the Garden State Parkway earlier this week. The SUV contained five members of a Staten Island family, as well as two additional family friends. New Jersey police are not yet sure what caused the fatal accident, but are continuing to investigate the crash.

One-fifth of New Jersey traffic fatalities are pedestrian deaths

One out of every five people killed in a traffic-related in New Jersey over the last decade was a pedestrian, according to a new national study. Such pedestrian accidents accounted for 21 percent of total traffic deaths for the years 2000 to 2009, with minority and elderly populations making up a disproportionate majority of those killed in car crashes in those years.

New Jersey police officer injured in car accident

Last week, a New Jersey police officer suffered serious injuries after his police cruiser collided with another vehicle as he was responding to a police call. Both the officer and the other driver suffered serious injuries in the car accident, but they are expected to make a full recovery. The reason for the accident remains under investigation.

New Jersey woman among victims of fatal bus crash

A New Jersey woman is dead following a tragic bus accident in Virginia earlier this week. The fatal accident is one in a line of several similar crashes in New Jersey and throughout the East, again calling into question the bus companies' safety standards and the federal government's regulation of them.

Jersey Shore star causes car accident in Italy

Although many New Jersey residents (and most Americans, for that matter) do not rush to claim the stars of MTV's "Jersey Shore" as their own, it is somehow still newsworthy when one of the cast members runs into trouble with the law. This is the case with the ubiquitous Snooki, who is believed to have caused a car accident in Florence, Italy, where the cast is currently filming its fourth season of the popular reality show.
