Are you familiar with why dogs bite?

It's easy to believe that every dog is cute, cuddly and friendly, but this is not always the case. Unfortunately, there are times when dogs bite, which can result in a serious injury that requires immediate medical attention.

No matter who you are, it's imperative to have a clear understanding of why dogs bite and/or attack. With this knowledge, it's much easier to prevent a bad situation in which you become the victim.

Here are some of the most common reasons why a dog bites or attacks a human:

  • A reaction to something. For example, if a dog is in a stressful situation, such as someone attempting to come onto its territory, its natural instinct is to bite or attack.
  • Dogs bite if they are startled or scared. You should never sneak up on a dog, as this can make it feel threatened. If you're going to approach a dog, especially one that you don't know, make sure you do so slowly and ensure that it sees you coming.
  • Dogs often bite when they are not feeling well. Just the same as a human, when a dog is under the weather it may want nothing more than to be left alone.
  • Dogs can bite when they think they're playing. While you assume that everything is fun and games, the dog might take it too far. Even a playful bite can cause serious harm.
  • Not all dogs have socialized with humans. For a dog to act friendly around humans it needs to have experience with this type of interaction. If it doesn't, the chance of a bite or attack is much greater.

This information can help prevent a dog bite, but there's no guarantee that it will always work.

If you are the victim of a dog bite or attack, don't wait to receive medical attention. Even if you only suffered a minor cut, you should still seek the care of an experienced medical professional.

Once you begin your path to recovery, turn your attention to the cause of the attack. You may find that the owner is responsible for your injuries and any other damages.
