Sushi Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

The New Jersey product liability attorneys at Breslin and Breslin are reporting that frozen raw tuna from Indonesia, shipped here and used by restaurants serving sushi, has been recalled because of possible Salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday.

As of last week, 60 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 11 states. Eleven ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So far there have been no illnesses reported in New Jersey.

The California-based distribution company Osamu Corporation, said it did not believe consumers were able to buy the product directly. Instead, it was sold in bulk to restaurants and grocery stores where it would be prepared for sale in sushi dishes.

The FDA said concerned consumers should inquire of their restaurant or grocery store about the source of their fish.

The recall includes chunk yellow tuna sold under the AFC label. The bulk of the recall affects raw tuna in all forms - loin, saku, chunk, slice, and ground market forms - distributed to restaurants.

Yellow fin tuna was also sold to a separate distributor, AFC Corporation, that packaged it as sushi sold in grocery stores.

The voluntary recall was announced after contamination by Salmonella bacteria was discovered in a sample of tuna shipped frozen from Indonesia.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The very young and very old may get far sicker.

If you or a loved one has become sick or injured from ingesting sushi, you may be entitled to compensation from the seller or distribution company. For a free case evaluation, contact the trusted New Jersey product liability attorneys at Breslin and Breslin today.
