Crash Victim awarded $850,000

THE RECORD

A 39-year old New York woman has been awarded $850,000 plus three years’ interest for back injuries suffered in Montvale when a dairy truck slammed into her car from the rear.

After a five-day trial in Superior Court in Hackensack, a jury Friday decided that Welch Farms Inc. of Long Valley must pay the money to Katherine Scolaro of Piermont.

The accident occurred Aug. 31, 1981, on Summit Avenue in Montvale. Mrs. Scolaro, who had attended a soccer match in which her son played, stopped her car at a flashing yellow light. A Welch Farms tractor-trailer struck the rear of her car, sending it 94 feet across the intersection.

Mrs. Scolaro’s attorney, Donald A. Caminiti of Hackensack, said Mrs. Scolaro suffered nerve damage and fractures of vertebrae in her back. He said she has been unable to continue her Piermont hairdressing business.
